Buyers beware of modems

The modem arrived in an unmarked box with no factory packaging and with a few scuffs. I studied the ad carefully and noticed that it says "Updated" in very small type. If I had noticed that before buying, I would have spent the same amount on a new one. I could live with that, but after spending literally the better part of a Sunday on the phone with Comcast (mostly on hold), this modem was finally determined to be faulty or misconfigured. This was after at least 20 resets. Coincidentally, we were able to get the phone working in a few hours. I could also connect a laptop to the Internet using a direct modem connection, but the same direct Ethernet connection wouldn't work with my desktop Mac Pro. Also, when I plugged the modem into the router, none of my computers, including the previously working PC, could connect over Wi-Fi. I went to Netgear support to try and get help but finally gave up after a few hours. Your support is not needed by anyone without a lot of time to kill, and there was no way to talk to a person. It's possible this router could be reconfigured to work, but it was a Comcast-specific modem, so it must have been properly configured at the factory. It was also a comeback. Comcast won't do anything to help reprogram a router unless it's one they rent. So I will probably never find out whether the modem was really defective or incorrectly programmed at the factory. But after looking at Netgear's online support, this router seems to have some problems. I would advise you, if you decide to buy this modem, to at least buy a non-renewed one.
