It's a gas cap, but the cable lasted "days ".

The tether has snapped, apparently just from the heat. The end of the cable that connects to the gap is simply "unplugged" from the cap itself. This is a harder plastic than the more rubbery cable from the original BMW. The lid itself seems to hold the gas tank well under vacuum, but don't rely on the tether to keep the lid from falling off.
