Nikon 200-500 replacement

I have a Nikon 200-500 but this came as a replacement. I rarely use the 200-500 due to its weight and bulkiness. My choice was between 500 f/4 (probably used or Sigma) or this 150-600. I opted for 150-600 during the day and 70-200 f/2.8e (at 1.4x or 1.7x) in the morning or evening. I wouldn't wear both at the same time. That gives me 6.5 pounds, or 5.8 pounds with a d500 and a TC or two. I would weigh about 9 pounds with a Sigma 500/4. If the weight wasn't an issue for me, I'd go for the 500/4. 300 f/4 + 1.4 tc is another reasonable option, especially when it's only 3.8 pounds with the camera, but I wanted to be able to work longer than 420mm. too bulky and heavy for the kind of hiking and shooting I want to do. Also, the 200-500's lens hood isn't securely attached and has been dropped onto the rail a few times when hitting something. I can't use the soft hood, the hood comes off when I try to put the hood on. The advantages of this 150-600 for me are: (1) it's noticeably lighter and less bulky, (2) 600, (3) the hood fits well. I think it takes about the same good photos under the right conditions. F/6.3 at the long end is normal in good light (d500), especially in the center. When the light is less good, I should use the middle focus point. Sometimes I have to focus a little, center the focus point and then focus, otherwise it yaws. I tried Kenko TC 1.4x and it works fine. This will be f/8 so just the middle focus point and good light. I took some shots at 840mm that look good even at 100% crop (it was a windy day with a monopod) and 1/1000.

Pros
  • One year trial
Cons
  • Can be damaged
