Review on TomTom 4 3 Inch Bluetooth Navigator Recognition by Brian Samuel

Good maps, traffic info and normal voice recognition

Full disclosure - I'm a big TomTom fan and this is an upgrade from an old TomTom Go 300 that I've had for 7 years. That's one of the reasons I really like these devices - they seem to last forever. I hope this one lasts just as long, but now on to that. The new lifetime maps and traffic features that GPS companies are offering really drew me to this model. I absolutely hated buying a new map every year or so, especially when you know that about 98% of the old map is still usable and only a small percentage has been updated. It would be great to have incremental updates and/or discounted updates depending on the old version number, but instead companies have gone down the "free for life" route. I like this as it ensures you always have the most up to date map before long trips. The only problem is that if you live in a part of the country where there is active construction, new roads for these devices can sometimes be slow to update. The fact that users can 'suggest' new roads, speed limits, closures, etc. is a nice feature and will hopefully eliminate some of the bugs of previous devices. I was a little worried about traffic when I was alive. I had no idea what I would need for this (a connected cell phone with a data plan? a dedicated aftermarket device?), but fortunately this model had everything needed to facilitate traffic information. The only thing you need is a cigarette lighter and a charger. The charger acts as an antenna for the traffic signal broadcast in most communities. When I was in the less populated areas around my house (including some parts of the freeway) there were no traffic lights, but in a big city - I had traffic reports almost every 5-10 minutes. Some of the updates informed me of delays but told me the route I was traveling on was still the quickest and sometimes the traffic report would tell me there was a faster route and ask me if I could use it want to take (you can tell her). automatically change if you want). This allowed us to avoid the scene of the accident, which lasted about 2 hours and left the cars for hours. We just drove down three lanes and avoided all of them. Thank you TomTom Traffic. The speech recognition is not quite successful and more annoying than it should be. I programmed it to the address I was looking for, but it didn't go as smoothly as I thought it would. This isn't the latest model, of course, so there are likely to be technology updates in newer versions. My version is up-to-date in terms of software, but could improve with future patches. As for the patches, this was the area where I was most disappointed with this model. Firstly I have been using TomTom Home (Go 300) for many years and when I tried to connect this device I was told that it was not recognized. You must use the latest TomTom software, which is entirely web-based, to update. No problem - just had to create an account and link it to my old account. This unfortunately disabled my Go 300 but I replaced it anyway so it wasn't a big issue. One slightly worrying area was that the map update for my 1435TM was too big to fit on my device! For real? Tried uninstalling the old map and even tried just installing the new map with no other updates - nothing helped. I had to resort to installing only the American portion of the US, Canada, Mexico map. Not a big issue as I don't live near Canada or Mexico, but it's still a bit annoying that my card doesn't fit my device. I hope future map updates will be more appropriate and update my device with the whole map. I'll keep my fingers crossed and if this doesn't work I'll email TomTom to let them know about the issue. Overall, the device has earned its place in my car. It has helped me avoid traffic, it has given me precise directions to a new store in my area and the advanced lane navigation feature is a huge improvement over the old Go 300 I had hope you could find out where the upcoming mega ramp drives /off with 50 different options to choose from (exaggerated but close to reality). While probably not as good as some of the newer TomTom models that offer 'live' services and other features along the way, it does what I need and is far more accurate than my cell phone mapping software.

Pros
  • Pretty impressive
Cons
  • Dull packaging
