I used this cutter to drill some holes in a car frame. I drilled them at the bottom where the frame is double thick (box frame). Its thickness is almost 1/2 inch. Worked very well but I went through 3 pilot bits. I recommend drilling a pilot hole with a 1/4 bit and then using the pilot hole just to center the router. There is a great temptation to cut the pilot part because it is a very difficult part to cut well. However, it cannot handle a bend.
