It is recommended to replace this item if you hear a growl or crunch in the headliner. There is even a GM Technical Service Bulletin listing this component. The replacement was quite complex but could be done with simple hand tools. Now I don't need to hear any more growling overhead and my air conditioning works much better. I also had an issue resembling a mixed door actuator issue where the driver's side air conditioner seemed to be looking for the correct temperature setting when the automatic climate control was on. After replacing this part I no longer have this problem and the air conditioner blows cold without changing the mixer flap actuator.
