We have well water that tastes great but has a lot of lime/scale in it. CLR perfectly dissolves limescale deposits in sanitary facilities as well as rust or limescale deposits in the toilet bowl. For toilets we just pour a cup or two into the bowl and pour over the rim to get the most out of it. It hisses and destroys any rust or scale. If it's been a while between treatments we'll leave it overnight and come in a couple of times with a toilet brush to fluff it up and re-wet the rim and bowl. Light brushing will easily remove any remaining debris. For showerheads, it's best to remove them and soak them in a plastic or glass bowl. Place the head face down in the bowl and pour the CLR into the pipe fittings to thoroughly soak the interior and clean any screens or diffusers. Fill the bowl just enough to saturate the jets. This usually takes 15 minutes. You can pick it up and see the liquid come out to make sure it's clean. You should be able to see nice, smooth individual streams if the head is dripping when you lift it. If water leaks or some nozzles are still clogged, just let it soak longer. We wiped down the bronze fittings with oil and the grout didn't affect the finish at all. If you can't or don't want to detach the shower head, you can put it in a zippered bag and tie it up. This is best for scheduled maintenance when not heavily clogged. You can do the same with sink faucets, etc. to keep the aerator clean and water flowing smoothly. Be sure to open all windows/doors and use fans to ventilate as this can damage your eyes and lungs. After this treatment, rinse the entire shower well as the solution can break down over time. If possible, remove the shower head and let it soak outside - this is indeed the safest and correct way to do it *NOTE. Be very careful when turning on the devices after processing, especially if you used the zip-pocket method. This is an acidic solution that can burn your eyes and lungs, and any product residue inside the device will be sprayed out on first use. I have a rain shower head that never ceases to amaze me how much liquid can be in it when it's off, and more depending on the angle you hold it. This means you can have baffles that hold CLR and disperse it as you spin. Water is included even if you think it's empty. I put a little on my skin and washed it off quickly with no problem, but it can sting people with fair or soft skin if left on for a while. I believe it will damage your eyes immediately. Be sure to rinse the faucet well before use, rinsing off any residue from the sink, tile, or grout to avoid damage or stains. This is a great product but you have to be careful; Wear gloves, safety goggles and do not allow fumes to collect or inhale. Keep children and pets away from the treatment area to avoid accidents.
