Inexpensive for drawing, coloring and art supplies

Black lead snapped while sharpening, also pink and green but not as bad as black - then I read that you have to sharpen it with a utility knife which I'm sure would have more trouble with because I don't do it. It's funny because they show the pencils are sharpened and they were sharpened with a pencil sharpener. Is that the case when I do what I say and not what I do? They were cheap so can't complain too much.
