Important assembly tip!

Assembly was tedious but I was able to do it with the screws included with these steps. The problem is that the carriage bolts are held in place by the locknuts. The square bit under the thick bottom bracket head should fit into the square holes in the top of the crossbars to prevent the bolt from turning when the locknuts are tightened. To do this, the bolts must be pulled through the rubber pad. You can't do that by hand. Here's how I did it: I grabbed the wrench that came with it, laughed, and threw it away. Each strut uses 4 lock nuts and 2 regular nuts. I used a 9/16 socket and regular nuts to thread each bolt through the rubber mount into the square hole, fully tightened the regular nut, and then removed it. Some of the bolts tangled the rubber a bit along the way, but I kept pulling and got it out. I then used a 1/2" deep socket to tighten the lock nuts on the short bolts. This required putting the nuts on twice. I tried using just the nylock nut but couldn't get enough torque by hand .
