First things first. Before attempting to replace the tether, try the cap on your car to ensure it is properly seated. It was a great match for my 2008 Silverado 1500 with flex fuel. To reuse the factory cap lanyard, I simply pry up the black plastic retainer (the thicker, slotted part) just below the lanyard ring to disassemble the old cap and release the lanyard itself. This is not a problem for me as I have previously tested the new cap to ensure it fits as stated above. Then on the new cap I soaked the ring of the tip in hot water for a while and then installed from the top (yellow) side, putting on the thicker part of the ring first and slowly raising the rest of the ring over the yellow rim of the cap. Sometimes I poured hot water over the parts to provide lubrication and make the plastic a bit more flexible. It helped to use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the edge while walking. Be careful not to let the screwdriver slip and hit your arm (just saying). I hope this cover will work well for some time. I will update if not.
