I used these for two of my snakes in the bathrooms as I didn't have space in my rack and didn't want to order heating tape, I used my thermostats with it (herpstat ez2), one of the heating plates got hot and the other didn't and never did so I insist on using a thermostat because not everything you get is the same and since there are no numbers on the dial it can't be anything but a minimum or maximum. Electricity because it doesn't have a built-in thermostat. Plus it works great if you can get one that really heats up, and it's cheap too!
