ECOGARD XT10333 Professional filter set for automatic transmission

This is the first time for me that the spacer is not working properly. I installed a gasket on a 2015 Town and Country that had a slow leak from the existing transmission oil pan. After removing the pan from the car, I cleaned it at the parts washer. The mating surface on the gearbox was also cleaned and wiped with a parts cleaner. Both parts were left to dry for over an hour before being reassembled. I applied some black RTV to the surface, just enough to hold the gasket in place during the connection, and reinserted the screws by hand. In the service manual I listed the torque in 3 steps up to 14 ftlbs. I did this in a criss-cross pattern until all the bolts were tightened to spec. I let them sit for an hour before topping up the transmission with fluid. After filling the transmission, I checked under the car for leaks. No leaking immediately, no leaking after filling 2 liters. After about 3 blocks it started leaking heavily. Upon further investigation, the gasket was moving/slipping or whatever you want to call it between the oil pan and transmission surfaces. Now I don't know if RTV did this, but I can confirm the gasket was in place just before I put the fluid in. I took the whole thing apart to figure out the problem and the gasket bulged a lot so the bolt holes in the gasket were oval. At that point I took it off and threw it in the trash. All surfaces cleaned again and only used the RTV. I screwed it up the exact same way and after an hour and a half I filled it up. No leaks this time. The only thing that really struck me the second time around was the strength and feel of the screws as they were tightened. The rubber grommet from this kit did not give a positive feel when tightening the bolts in my opinion and may even have caused them to tighten due to rubber deformation. Anyway I really don't know what happened, I wasn't happy I had to do it 2 times and the part I bought broke in the process. It could have been a bad product or something I did, although I've never experienced this with a seal I've ever replaced on a car, truck, snowmobile, quad bike or anything. It was just weird. On a positive note, the filter that came with the kit was there along with the new gasket. Use a gasket puller to pry out the old gasket, but don't reach the top of the gasket as it will dig into the aluminum hole in the gearbox.

Pros
  • Lots of positive emotions
Cons
  • The list will be long.
