Review on RSVP Deluxe Corn Stripper SHUCK by Erin Lee

Revainrating 4 out of 5

If you can love the tool, this will definitely be one of them.

Before I got this tool, I peeled the cores off the piston like most people do with a sharp knife. I placed the cob on a cutting board, placed a knife on the top of the cob, and ran the knife down the length of the cob in a straight cut. Since it was a straight cut I would have gotten about 2 full rows of kernels (if I had positioned the knife correctly and made a straight cut along the cob) and the rows on either side were halved without getting the whole kernel. Sometimes it was "Oops, the ear slipped onto the cutting board" or "Oops, I almost tripped over my finger there" or "Oops, I cut off the part of the cob with the grains". There were also at least 4-5 cuts per cob and usually the juices from the cut grains would fly all over the cutting board and onto the counter, not to mention the corn juices splattering everywhere. Any of you who have ever cut corn on the cob with a knife can understand everything I said here. Cutting the beans with a knife, plucking the beans from the cutting board, and placing them in a storage bag can take at least 3-5 minutes per cob. With this tool, insert the corn cob into the cylinder, the cutter tool, push the tool, remove the cutter tool from the cylinder, insert the pusher into the cylinder to push out the empty cob, and dump the corn kernels into the storage bag. The whole process takes less than 30 seconds with no mess. Before purchasing this tool I read reviews that said it was only for medium to large pistons, but I have processed over 8 dozen pistons and have not encountered a single one that can't handle it. Maybe short people mean short, but the corn on the cob has to be pretty short for it not to fit. If they mean narrow, the butt has to be pretty narrow for it not to work. I believe any regular sized plunger will work with this stripper. Anyway, this stripper has made my life so much easier and I'm no longer afraid to strip the kernels from fresh corn. Fresh or blanched and frozen, I will never buy store-bought frozen corn again. There really is no comparison to the corn kernels you make from fresh corn. UPDATE 9/17/13 I took off 1 star because the plastic tube that holds the corn kernels breaks easily. The second time I used it, it slipped off and part of the top broke. Further along in the work, another piece broke off the top of the tube. A little further into the cut it doesn't cut as well anymore and I noticed that the incisors on one side were curved inwards. So I straightened it out with pliers and continued. I managed to get through 4 dozen grommets, some of which had to be cut off with a knife as they were too wide on one end. Despite the issues and breakage (it can still be used), this tool still cuts the time it takes to get the job done with a lot less mess (unless my husband uses it). Although it would be better if it was made of a more durable material. For the price I don't think it will last very long. UPDATE 6/19/19: I bought a replacement corn stripper for the one I broke 6 years ago and then bought another just in case I broke the replacement. So far I haven't had to use the extra. Each year we buy 10-12 dozen ears of fresh organic sweetcorn that I blanch, hull and freeze for future meals. This corn stripper has served me all along and still works great. I don't want to do without it and would never cut corn again. Since each ear takes about 5 seconds to assemble and clean, I can make several dozen ears in about an hour and a half, including blanching and packaging. Of course, depending on the diameter of the cob, more pressure may be required to cut the grains, but only wide cobs require more pressure. Most cobs fall off very quickly. Personally, I will never want to cut the kernels off the corn with a knife again. Using this tool is much faster and easier. I hope this review was helpful to you. I will update the review if my opinion changes.
