Review on 🎣 Enhance Your Fishing Experience with MarCum LX-i Digital Handheld Sonar by James Gregg

Portable echo sounder Marcum LX-i. Great tool!

Bought for ice fishing on inland lakes in Michigan. The ice was clean the first time and it worked great. During the second and subsequent trips, the ice melted and refroze at the summit. The ice cream was far from perfect. Despite this, the device still fired and gave accurate depth for the most part. There was only one deviation of about 3 feet (at a depth of 6 feet). Also, it doesn't seem to read anything less than 3 feet (1-2 feet in the known range). As recommended I cleared the snow and then poured some water over the ice to create the bond. This trick works 95% of the time. Otherwise, I blame bad ice cream. The device has a fish detector that works between depth measurements. He caught a 1/4 oz jig very reliably at 8 feet. So make sure your line is not in the water when measuring. Otherwise you will see your bait or bait and think it is a fish. The device will turn off after 15 seconds, so it cannot be left on and used as a fish finder. The device also likes to stay warm. I found it started off a bit slow on 5 or 10 degree days. A few minutes in a jacket or pocket and the device would quickly turn on and off. The only criticism of this device is the battery cover. It's held in place by a rotating cam (a latch you turn with a coin). It's plastic and the overall fit feels a little "wrong". I lubricated the o-ring to try it and that seems to have helped. I'm not sure if it's waterproof and the manual doesn't mention it (or I missed it). The battery cover is definitely a weak point. There must be a better o-ring to allow for a looser fit between the mating parts. The unit floats, although I'm not fully submerged due to concerns about the battery door. After all, the battery is kind of like an old 35mm camera. They probably had to go this route to get higher voltage in a small package. Not a huge complaint, just hoping I can still find a battery in 10 years. I recommend this for quickly determining water depth. Works and works well! Great tool and I would say a great price. Good job Mark.

Pros
  • nice touch
Cons
