I had six newborn chicks on Wednesday and their heating pad keeps them warm and happy. I leave it on all the time, lying on the floor of their brood box in a 70 degree room, with a light sprinkling of pine shavings on the pillow and an inverted basket on top to give them a shelter. They run under the basket, on their bedding when they get cold. They stay there to take a nap or until they are warm and then come back to eat and play. At night, as soon as I turn off the light in the room where I keep them, they curl up on a pillow and sleep all night without making a sound. It's much easier than using a heat lamp, safer, and feels more natural.
