Best 3.1 DOCSIS Modem for XFinity

At first I was fed up with some negative reviews but after reading online reviews from reputable sources and trying this modem for myself, this modem is amazing! First of all, the installation was very easy. In short: 1.) Switch on. 2.) Plug an ethernet cable from your modem into your laptop and go to xfinity.com/activate3.) All you have to do is sign in as if you're going to pay the bill and that's it. - no account numbers or the like! 4.) CALL XFINITY TO ACTIVATE YOUR HARDWARE! Don't skip this step! 5.) Provide the serial number and MAC address (DOCSIS 3.1, not DOCSIS 3.0 - look closely at the device, not the box, there are (2) MAC addresses, enter the number 3.1). 6.) Connect the modem to the router via Ethernet (at least Cat 6), connect the telephone line and you're done. All of these steps literally took me less than 15 minutes, including one call to XFinity. I wanted to switch to my own modem and started saving $11 (plus tax) a month for a while and finally decided to do it. I hated paying rent and then I found out one little detail too, you know the free XFinity hotspot they talk about all the time, I've never really thought about where it's from, that's right, Your rented modem/router. This sucker is enabled by default and XFinity uses your power to turn on the XFinity public hotspot. Absolutely sucks I ended it in the XFinity My Account app as soon as I figured it out. The next thing I did during the rental was turn off wifi by putting the device in bridged mode. Just a tip for those who are still renting. I highly recommend switching to a bridge and using your own router, it's much better than theirs. Better yet, buy your own modem and route. Alright rant, back to the review. It's easily two, if not three times smaller than a rented modem/router. It seems like a given since one device replaces two. And at this point, for reliability and ease of diagnosis, it's better to have two separate devices than two devices in one case. The device also looks very unassuming and is aesthetically pleasing enough, at least for me, to put on display. Overall, the build quality, construction, and overall feel seem to match the price. I have the feeling that I'm getting my money's worth at the moment. Reliability will eventually amplify or eliminate this. It loads much faster than the rented one (1-2 minutes) and offers better performance. The latency in my speed tests went down from 12-15ms to around 7-9ms and I'm getting slightly better downloads, but not by much. However, it's one of only two XFinity-approved DOCSIS 3.1 modems - think up to 10Gb/s. Now I'm on the right track - 250Mbps (every 250 and then more), but I'm thinking about moving to 1Gbps. In the meantime, we're dreaming of this modem achieving 2 Gbps with link aggregation, but the software update is still a work in progress. Basically, two ethernet cables go from your modem to your router at 1Gbps each, but behave like a 'single' cable, providing a total throughput of 2Gbps. Far out of most people's league, though XFinity has a 2Gbps over coax option, so I thought I'd throw it out there. I've only had it a few days, but was so amazed by the ease of setup and the exceptional performance that I thought I'd leave a review. I will of course update on reliability and sturdiness over the years, but so far very promising.

Pros
  • WORKS WITH ANY WIFI ROUTER, BETTER WITH WIFI 6: Connect any WIFI router to this modem's Ethernet port to support all your wireless devices. Connect to a NETGEAR WiFi 6 router or Orbi Mesh System for the fastest Internet access.
Cons
  • Sad Hardware
