For a much less dusty workshop

The only thing in my workshop that has caused more dust than my chop saw when using it by hand. I have top of the line sanders with dust bags and a sanding station with top, back and sides [anything without them runs at 20% efficiency]. A jointer, planer, router table, band saws and other tools collect dust well, but the miter, a commonly used tool, was difficult to dust. The old projection TV case worked but was bulky. This solved that problem, collects dust well, is lightweight and still allows me to use the collector. A few weeks of use and an inch of dust behind the saw showed no signs of trying to come back. I really had to play to get it. Installed to my satisfaction, but designing something like this for every corner and standing out from the crowd would be nearly impossible. The only design issue I saw was the dust box pulling part of the hood into the exhaust port and clogging it. I solved this problem by using a 3/8" piece of plywood about 5-1/2" wide and about 20" long. I cut a hole the same size as the port in the center and then hot glued it around the port. shouldn't be a problem. Of course you can also use silicone sealant. The hood installed and running works great. Now I just need to add a light and a switch.

Pros
  • Internal baffles keep fine dust out
Cons
  • Almost never
