I'm by no means an expert on microscopes, but I'm an expert on what I do, which is looking at alluvial gold and separating gold from what's not gold , this microscope does its job well. I'm also glad I have the option to add a digital camera, which I haven't gotten to yet. The adapter for my Sony Alpha 7 R IV costs more than a microscope. I wasn't sure what magnification I would need, so I opted for a higher magnification than what I got with a previously borrowed student dissecting microscope. More magnification means I need more light. Ring lamp I have about 50 LEDs. I just ordered 144 LEDs. The higher zoom levels really are too much for gold flakes and nuggets, but close-ups are often stunningly beautiful and I can always switch to lower zoom levels if needed.
