Review on 🚲 Swagman Deluxe Bike Rack - RV Approved and Fits Around Spare Tires by Sfl Richardson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good bike rack but a bit narrow

When I first installed the rack I was disappointed because it was too narrow to touch the tires and forced the handlebars to tilt inwards to get on to hit the narrow connecting rod. (see my 4th photo) But I found a review where someone had the same problem and moved the spare tire a bit higher to give more room. I repeated the installation and mounted the spare tire first as shown in the 3rd photo. The top hole of the tire is now a few inches higher than the top bolt. That extra height gave enough room for the Swagman bumper mount U-clamps to slide inward to keep the A-pillars from leaning too much. It's still a bit tight as it touches the tire underneath, but I'm happy with the setup. My suggestion to Swagman is to make the horizontal connecting rod longer and possibly with more holes. Another 2 inches wider would be helpful to allow for more tire clearance and clearance. Also, a wide roll bar would help better support adult bikes; Narrow handlebars are more suitable for children's bicycle frames. Problem as I couldn't get them to slide into the square holes. I was tempted to assemble the kit and send it back due to problems. 1.) Tire does not fit. 2.) Racks will not slip into bracket holes. 3.) Missing hardware. Note that the missing hardware was a result of buying an open box set when apparently another disappointed buyer returned the device but without all the screws. in a tire shop), I overcame all 3 problems. I ended up having to drive the posts fully into the square holes in the brace (this would be difficult to remove now). Also had to buy a set of 3/8"-16 nuts ($2+ at Home Depot for 10 with nylon lock nuts) and found a T-bolt/nut for the horizontal crossbar in my spare hardware drawer at home. Note They that I didn't get any support from Swagman through Revain's hardware support link, turns out the support is only for the first time purchase of an unopened product from Home Depot and costs $2+ I see a few negatives Reviews about the racks flexing when loaded with bikes I haven't gotten to that point yet but plan on using ratchet straps to secure the bikes and rack to the tire when I find the bar mount overall am now happy with my swagman bike rack but I think the company can improve their product Versions would be first on my list as it wouldn't cost much more if it was 2" to 4" bre it would be and would have more holes. Tolerances on square posts and mating holes need to be improved to allow all products to be easily inserted and removed during initial installation. I found mine to be too tight so I had to hammer them into holes, making it almost impossible to remove them later if needed, such as to change a tire. Finally, it appears that the thickness of the upright tubes needs to be increased, as buyers have reported bending when used to support two bikes in normal use. The increase in caliber will increase the cost slightly, but should make the product more reliable and improve customer satisfaction, which will boost Swagman's reputation.
