A great alternative to renting a CenturyLink modem

, Westell?) up to $10 per month. I decided to just buy a modem. They told me I could buy a modem I already had for $100, Revain had one for a lot less, but this TP-Link TD-8817 had better reviews. We already had a router, so I didn't need the modem/router combo (which this modem doesn't). A few tips if you are migrating from a CL provided modem to this one: IME, this TP-Link modem will not work if it is down. in bridge mode with CL service. As Mr. Lopez said in his review, settings are 8/35 for VPI/VCI and bridge mode is top in fast boot, just ipllc with bridge. Have a box to send back your old modem and all the cables that came with it. You only send the label, no box. Check your next bills that they no longer charge you for the returned modem. Mr. Lopez has great information. If you purchase this modem and have Century Link, please print out a chart for reference during installation. The only problem I have is that I can't download updated firmware as I can't get this modem to work without bridged mode and I can't access the modem when it's plugged in. I could probably download the firmware first and then connect my computer directly to the modem and then update the firmware and I could do that if I run into problems in the future, but for now it works.
