Review on πŸ’» Dell U3818DW QHD Ultrawide Gaming Monitor with LED Lit Screen, 3840X1600P Resolution by David Spresser

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works well with my MacBook Pro 13 " 2018.

I had major reservations about choosing this monitor over the equivalent LG over the cheaper 4k 43 inch monitor. I had concerns about the quality and warranty service from LG, which offers official support for Mac. This Dell doesn't have official Mac support but has a solid reputation for quality. In the end I went with Dell and I'm very happy with it so far. For me this is a 100% working monitor so I will only comment on that aspect. for me it's email, programming, powerpoint etc, nothing to do with video editing or high quality graphics. one of my main concerns was unscaled ppi as i wanted to have as much real estate as possible - my previous dual monitors were around 94 pixels per inch . This Dell shows 109 dpi, which was the high end of what I wanted. A 43 inch 4k monitor is 102 dpi, which is better, but I ultimately decided that 43 inches was too big to take full advantage of the entire screen, plus the current 43. "Monitors aren't curved. 109 ppi is fine have a PDF at 100% and the same PDF is slightly enlarged. The same applies to the web browser. I tend to go up a notch or two, but not always have I also pushed the monitor forward a bit so that I'm sitting closer to it than on my previous 94 ppi (24-inch resolution, 1920 x 1200) monitors. Another major issue I had was screen sharing during web calls. The resolution of 4k (or 3840 x 1600 in this case) is too high for screen sharing, so I used the PBP (Picture by Picture) feature to share the screen, I lowered the screen sharing resolution to 1080p and it works well. To do this I just add a display port cable in addition to my MBP connection to USB-C and everything works fine from my one MBP. The monitor doesn't switch automatically - you have to go into the menu and select PBP, so it's a bit fiddly, but overall it works great. I only do this once or twice a week - if I had to do this every day I'd probably just shrink the entire screen instead of splitting it. Use my Logitech mouse USB receiver connected to Dell and it works fine. Moving the mouse doesn't wake up the Mac, but pressing a key on the magic keyboard does the trick. Note that USB-C does not have enough bandwidth to support both near-4k resolution and high-speed USB (remember USB 3.0?). So if you're relying on an external hard drive for USB 3.0 speeds, you'll need to either connect it directly to the MBP or use DisplayPort for video and USB-C for data to control the Dell USB hub's capabilities. Other reviewers point out that you can't control volume on Dell speakers with MBP, and rightly so. The problem, however, is that macOS doesn't support this feature, so it's not Dell's fault. You can see in one of the attached photos that I'm using a Jabra Bluetooth speakerphone anyway, so I completely bypass the Dell speakers during a conference call. I was initially skeptical about the Flex until I realized that both of my monitors are tilted towards me. So, curved monitors do exactly what you would do if you had multiple monitors. Anyway, now I think I'd like a more aggressive curve for any future monitor! Some current controversies. I'm using a USB-C to connect to a Dell and it works great (as long as I don't have to do PBP as advertised). I am using my MBP in clamshell mode as you can see in the photo. Turning off the Dell with the MBP on and in clamshell mode causes problems so I just leave things alone and let the MBP sleep on its own and then the Dell sleeps on its own and everyone is happy until I hit my magic keyboard and that was it waking up the next morning. Overall I'm very happy with this Dell (but now I'm dreaming of an 8k 43" Ultra-Wide Curved Monitor in the future!). I hope this review helps everyone on the fence, especially MBP users.

Pros
  • A single-cable solution with a USB Type-C connector provides power, audio, and video transmission between the laptop and monitor. Change the video resolution to the correct aspect ratio
Cons
  • Bad response time.
