Last year I received a shishigashira at a local garden center that was languishing in the late summer heat. My first such attempt, although I've had my eye on a good maple for a while, it was sooo cheap and I figured why not. But I made one last attempt, excising the sores with a pruning knife and removing anything that even looked remotely infected, covering the wounds with kional and treating them systemically. And this spring the disease returned! There is no infection in new branches, leaves and buds! The perforated wounds have healed, except for one particularly large one, which is still covered with kiyonal and sealed. After working with the product a few times, you will feel comfortable. It's interesting because it's not thick like the black in a metal or aerosol can (which has its uses), it's larger. "Thin" but sticky, like a mixture of glue and toothpaste. It's not always easy to keep it where you put it when the wound is slippery and gravity is working against you, but I like that it's a bit softer and keeps things more supple and moist while healing, if that makes sense. I also use it for roses and flowers where other things would be overkill. I bring alcohol swabs or a bottle of alcohol and towels (which you should still have for your pruning tools so you don't spread the disease) and wipe my gloved finger and then wipe the opening of the tube after a little on the finger pressed , which helps. Minimize problems with dirty lids.
