Review on πŸ“Ά Enhance WiFi Signal with Alfa 9dBi WiFi Booster - Perfect for Drones & Yuneec Typhoon H ST16 Controller by Dustin Ramsey

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Long but hopefully helpful review.

This is a review that I can't seem to post. The point is I have a good piece of data and another piece of data that I've been observing closely and couldn't measure. So. I bought these antennas to try and increase the range of my 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network for use in my garage which is separate from my house. It's really, really, at the very edge of usable range where my wireless router is located. Before I bought it and installed it on my router, the speed was slow and the signal often dropped completely. Here are some numbers from a MacBook Pro with built-in WiFi diagnostics. The GenWI2 router is the one to which the antenna has been added. The other is an included network expander, let's call it a signal quality benchmark: inside old ant. 'GenWi2' rssi = -47, 'GenWi2_EXT' rssi = -75, Outside, old ant 'GenWi2' rssi = -77, 'GenWi2_EXT' rssi=-69, note that these numbers are all negative and represent signal strength. The closer the number is to zero, the stronger the signal. As you can see, the signal inside (still a few rooms from the router) was pretty good. It was pretty slow on the outside, but you could get around 15Mbps at times when it was working well. So I bought a new antenna, installed it and ran the same test again, SAME PLACES inside and out. The numbers follow. Inside the new ant.'GenWi2' rssi=-41,'GenWi2_EXT' rssi=-74, Outside the new ant.'GenWi2' rssi=-77,'GenWi2_EXT' rssi=-72, first look at the numbers doesn't seem to have much of an impact on the outer numbers, which are important for my purposes. But if you look closely, you'll see that the signal condition was worse - the GenWi2_EXT number was 3dB lower, while the GenWi2 number stayed the same. Is that an amazing difference? No, that is not so. However, I have noticed that the signal no longer drops completely, so that the signal is now fully usable (albeit slowly) in the garage at all times. So why 3 stars and not 5? Well it's not as big a jump as I was hoping to be honest. Why 3 stars and not 1? Because it REALLY worked and let's be honest they're not very expensive so they work, it wasn't costly to test them but it's not overwhelming.

Pros
  • Feels good
Cons
  • Sad packaging
