Review on Tamron SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD G2 Lens for Nikon DSLR Cameras by Barber Miller

Incredible telephoto zoom workhorse

Some negative reviews made me apprehensive about this lens, but after extensive use over the last month I have nothing but praise. This lens is sharp. Grab it sharp. Ridiculously sharp. Its focal plane at 600mm is very thin even at f/8, so any front/back focusing will render shots unusable. Before heading into the field, make sure your copy is good with a test strip to avoid disappointment. Mine worked right out of the box, and the insanely fast autofocus finds focus to load instantly. It's even faster when using focus limiters. It's less of a trip to focus when the motor is spinning, like my Nikkor AF-S G 50mm, and more of a brief delay before "you've got focus". This is a shot taken with the Nikon D750, which has a good but not the best autofocus system. I find the manual focus ring almost useless because the throw is so short, but I'm not sure why you would need it on a lens with such effective autofocus. The chromatic aberration is practically zero and the smallest of all proprietary lenses even at full aperture. At the moment I forgot the Lightroom CR uninstall tool. The operating system is amazing. I usually leave it in mode 1, but sometimes I find modes 2/3 useful. When I'm in a stable position, I can easily shoot at shutter speeds of 1/100 and slower at 600mm, which is very handy when I don't want to set up a tripod. . I didn't even try to mount the filters on the front because they would be very expensive and difficult to transport. I've had to deal with 150mm square filters for my 15-30mm lenses, and that's about all I'd want to put in a backpack. It would be nice to be able to use small 52mm circular polarizers or something like that, but to be honest I don't need filters very often when using this lens. The oversized lens hood does the double duty of protecting the lens from dust and dirt and is easy to clean with a good lens cloth. The tripod ring is well designed and just works. Its functionality is unobtrusive as it does what it's supposed to. I can't believe this lens is being sold so cheaply, even at full retail. If you get a good copy, you won't regret it. Therefore, if you get a bad copy, buy from Revain.
