Today the thermometer exploded and spilled glass on my food. Very glad the lid was closed otherwise I could be in the ER with glass on my face by now! The main problem is that the fat burns and you have to clean it often - otherwise it will be unreadable. I did this last week and noticed water got into the thermometer. I leaked it for a few days - thought it was clean but no. I started the grill but the thermometer was still on the table. Place the thermometer on the hot grill, close the lid and BAM! Think there's still water in there. Judge for yourself. Something you want to play around with? I'm not the only one who had this problem.
