I use the alarm system identically to the car alarm system. I get off the bike, push the button, hear the beep and think it's safe enough. I also reinforce it with a deadbolt lock. The alarm is only needed to make noise, distract the thief and draw attention to the bike. The alarm clock itself is quite loud and "obnoxious" enough to draw attention. A lot of bikes have been stolen in my life so this kind of precaution is a bit experimental as I know how sneaky thieves can be.
