- I used a tool to tighten the bolts connecting the cylinder head to the engine block with the torque. I was replacing the cylinder head and head gasket on a 2000 VW Jetta 2.0 GL 5 speed transmission. Due to the complexity of this repair and the fact that you have to get it right in order to even start the car again, I decided to use a torque angle tool. Likewise. Cylinder head bolts are rated to yield point (tty) and any improper tightening can damage threads, bolts or worse. This tool (used in conjunction with a torque wrench) eliminates this possibility of error - The tool comes with a scant instruction manual - I bought a special M10 tool specifically for the VW Jetta cylinder head bolts. This is the tool you use to remove and install cylinder head bolts. Following the manufacturer's instructions for installing the head bolts (I used the Haynes manual) I torqued the head bolts to 40 ft/lbs. This tightening required an additional 90 degree tightening. This is where a torque-angle measuring tool comes in handy. You set it to zero degrees and, in combination with a torque wrench, tighten the bolts to the manufacturer's recommended specifications. Then tighten the screws to the 90 degree mark. I hope the pictures I posted help. Good luck with your repair!
