I'm so happy! No assembly was required. This ladder (to me it is a ladder) is packed in a flat box and opens as shown in the picture. Easily folds back into a slim and flat shape for storage. It is a solid and well thought out device. The steps are wide and deep enough that I don't feel like my feet are dangling, and each step is fitted with durable rubber, which adds to my sense of security. Honestly, I'm scared of heights, but the rounded top handlebar gives me a sense of security. The air draft compartment at the top is the most convenient; Holes for screwdrivers, lockable compartment. This stool (I still think of it as a small ladder) is the perfect height (number of steps) that allows me to safely reach the top shelves in my closets. .The legs are large, with rubber pads for more security. It was a bit heavy for this little older lady, but that's actually a plus as it's steely rather than tacky. It's a winner and I'm glad I bought it and not one of those flimsy fake vintage kitchen stools. Highly recommended.
