Review on Minoura Accessory Handlebar LW Clamp Devices by Marcus Munoz

Disappointed - great holder, poorly designed mounting clip

The design is great until you try to install it. There are two curved terminal blocks that you can see in the product description. These independent rods rotate and snap onto a smooth round nut that runs through the center of the assembly. To install it you need to remove the barrel nut, place the clamps on the stem, thread the barrel nut through the hole in one of the stems, then through the base and then through the other stem. Once you've threaded it, you'll need to use your X-ray vision and a third hand to hold everything in place while you search and pick with the screw, trying to find the threads in the barrel nut. As if that wasn't enough, the barrel nut has tapered ends so the clamp rods will try to pop out once you start tightening them. If you're lucky and very patient, you can eventually find a balance where it's tight enough to stay in place, but loose enough that the bars don't pop out of the tapered barrel. Unfortunately, if you drive a mile or two, one or both. The bars will still pop out again. It appears to be a feature designed to give you an extra exercise every ten minutes, getting off your bike to walk thirty feet and rebuilding your GPS and mirror with a knot that just fell to the ground. I'm generally a big Minura fan. I have at least a dozen Minoura products that are long lasting, effective, and well made. I've had a plastic Minoura accessory holder for about 15 years that just broke so I was very happy to find this improved device, especially when there seemed to be a lot of positive feedback. The only thing I can think of is that I may have gotten the block with a defective barrel nut, and maybe everyone else has one that doesn't taper on either end, but that seems unlikely, and even then it's a headache to install. This product would be great if they kept the simple clamp but the barrel nut renders the entire jig useless. I hate giving a star to a product that seems so sophisticated and complete, but because of the poorly designed clip, if someone gave me one I would decline. If you don't have a welder, don't buy one.
