This is a large thick vinyl rug. We have about 26 inches of carpeting in front of the fireplace, and honestly, that distance is barely enough to protect the carpeting. I didn't buy it for a BBQ or fire but for carpet and it was a master at both protecting carpet and withstanding burning coals. In fact, it hasn't been damaged by burning coals, not even oak and other hardwoods - doesn't melt or react (unlike "cheap" fireplace rugs which usually *melt*). There are no scalloped edges or other issues that can arise when using a lighter weight rug. And of course, for what it is and does, it's a lot cheaper than a wool or fiberglass fireplace rug. We don't take it directly to the fireplace, since it's not a good idea to expose the PVC to high temperatures for long periods of time, but at 20 inches from the chimney it stays cool and protects the carpet. Good buy - although unfortunately the price has gone up almost $10 since we bought it <8 weeks ago.
