Review on BeaverCraft Carving Chisel Carbon Handle by Shantel Griffin

Doesn't keep sharp - Updated - Seller says you shouldn't use this with a hammer.

If you plan on using this on anything other than knotless softwood, forget it. The tool just can't take the sharpening. I cut a piece of softwood with a branch and in less than 5 minutes of use the edge was bent. I don't care if it gets dull, I can sharpen it quickly, but a bent edge is a different story. It's just a hassle to fix and not worth the effort if it comes back after 5 minutes. Update: Based on my initial review, the seller contacted me and offered a replacement. I got a replacement and tested it briefly. It was sharp out of the box and picked up shavings of softwood with no problem. I was happy until I hit the knot. The cutting edge was bent again by two blows with a hammer. I find the steel too soft and the cutting edge not sufficiently hardened. If you use it on softer, knotless woods, it's probably worth the money. But if you like the knot shape in your bowl or you want a tool that can be used with any piece of scrap, you should probably go for something better. Unfortunately, high quality gouges cost 2-3 times more. Here is a quote from a message the seller sent me. I think it contains important information that is missing from the product description. "Also, it's only for hand use and you mentioned in your review that you used a hammer. This caused a general problem. If you need a chisel to use a hammer, you definitely need another.” My translation is: This is a cheap tool not designed for woodworking.
