During my kitchen remodel, I had to install 112 drawers and cabinets, each of which required two holes to be drilled in 3/4 inch hardwood. My drill dulled quickly and I figured at this rate I would need to buy at least three more drills. two or three to finish the job and one more to get back to my drill index box. At about $3.50 each, that was $11.50. Also, I had three complete sets of drill bits with varying degrees of bluntness. If I could sharpen them all the savings in overhauling existing drill bits would easily add up to this machine. A bit of a rationalization actually, but that's how I justify buying most of the cool tools I have. Sometimes it gets a bit boring. Replacing each bit as it becomes dull can quickly pay for itself. Another explanation - you don't buy a new kitchen knife every time it gets dull, do you? At least I don't know. I sharpen my knives and keep them sharp. Blunt knives are no fun. But sharpening knives is quite easy, sharpening drill bits is much more difficult. I looked at cheaper sharpeners, but it seemed to me that they would take much longer to use. My guess is that sharpeners might be better for very large drill bits (up to 1/2 inch and larger). After receiving this sharpener, it took me a few minutes to read the instruction manual to understand how it works, and then a few minutes to sharpen my first 3/16" blunt drill bit. Under magnification it looked a bit rough. not as smooth as new but cuts like crazy! The first thing that struck me was that the sharpened drill bit flung away wood chips whereas earlier when dull it formed fine sawdust. I immediately thought of it the large shavings that a freshly sharpened chainsaw blade throws away when cutting, compared to the increasingly finer shavings and finally sawdust that a chainsaw blade produces when it becomes dull. The comparison seems reasonable.Like my kitchen knives, I don't wait for drill bits to dull me now have a quick and efficient way to sharpen them. Now that I've got the hang of it, I can sharpen a 3/16" drill bit in under 30 seconds. That's after oh how you've already sharpened it on this machine so that the corners match. This drill is fixed at 118Β°. Angle, which is a universal basic angle suitable for most tasks. Some of my drill bits were at a slightly different angle so it took a little longer to sharpen them to fit this 118Β° sharpener, but once it's done it's quick and easy. It's good to know that the Drill Doctor is made by Darex, a major manufacturer of industrial sharpeners, who probably know what they're doing. may justify the purchase but I'm glad to know I'll never have dull drill bits and never have to stop everything to replace a dull drill bit. For long-term cost savings and peace of mind - this was a great purchase!
