Works as intended. I wish the chipset interconnect cable was longer because it's inconvenient to use that large adapter on a mobile device. I'll try to use the gender change extension, although some say it won't work. The quirk is that before connecting to the device, it must be connected to the network, otherwise the device will not be powered. The chipset gets warm, but no problems so far. USB is great for powering peripherals like keyboards. If you want the Ethernet connection to remain active after the device goes into sleep mode, it must be connected to a power source. Otherwise, Ethernet works until the device goes to sleep, then it's wireless only. Works great in Airplane mode, although Apple and some apps have a popup saying Wi-Fi is on and when you click OK Ethernet takes over for that app. Apple's "Calls over Wi-Fi" setting requires some software work. Sometimes the calls come, but most of the time they don't. VoIP applications such as Google Voice/Hangouts and Magic Jack work seamlessly over Ethernet. You can call me a computer scientist because I have two degrees in network communications, so I was interested in checking it out. Update 6.6 male/female lighting cable works as an extension cable. Check the update 13 months later. The two I ordered lasted about a year. The weight of the wrench will eventually snap the power cord from the lightning adapter or damage the internal circuitry. Without disassembling the device and without testing, I cannot determine what is the cause of the breakdown. Slightly bending the cable brings one of these to life, but becomes intermittent and unreliable. Given the low cost of this product, you could buy five of these devices every year for the next five years and still have cash left over by ordering the Belgian-made $99 Apple MiFi-certified model. Instead of a model with a USB adapter, I'm ordering a model with just Ethernet and power adapters because I believe that lighter weight can provide longer product life. I rarely use USB which allows access to iOS device file system for photos and videos. This is useful if you want to back up individual files to USB alongside IOS iCloud backup. I still highly recommend this product.
