I've had a knock under the hood of my 2003 ML350 for several months. It was driving me insane because I couldn't pinpoint exactly where it was coming from. is it an engine power steering pump? Sometimes it's hard to tell because the sounds bounce off the engine bay. A friend on a forum suggested I buy this mechanical stethoscope and honestly I thought it was the dumbest thing I've ever seen! But I ordered it anyway, and what do you know?! I could focus on the problem. My air conditioning compressor seems to have a bad bearing. It's a deceptively simple device. Unlike a medical stethoscope, where the diaphragm is at the end, all vibrations are transmitted through the bottom probe to the small diaphragm at the top (that round black part). You will then hear the transmitted sound in your ears. If you have engine noise that you cannot locate, THIS tool is essential. (Even if you look stupid using it!)
