I used this while traveling around Thailand, Myanmar and Cambodia with my boyfriend. While I can't answer whether or not a converter is really necessary, I can say without a doubt that we've used it at every place we've stayed and it's usually the first thing we install at each place to have . Having visited 8 cities in 3 countries in 2 1/2 weeks we have never worried about charging any of our electronics and being able to safely charge 3 devices (mainly iPhones and iPads) at the same time via USB ports. , as well as charging backup power devices at the same time, relieved us of the stress of being and staying connected. I don't write many reviews but wanted to do so in this case because I found this charger to be invaluable. I also bought a case, which I also recommend for storing various adapters and any cables that may be needed. We didn't lose anything with this and made it easy to set up at each stop (instead of rummaging through our bags for adapters and cables).
