We have used these to make candles by dipping them in molten balls of fully refined paraffin - 3 lbs. and they worked great and burn well, nice and without even smoke (except the normal amount when you blow them out). We measured about 20 inches of the wick, tied clean studs to the ends (to make them heavier and let them hang straight while the candles are lit), and primed them before dipping them into the melted wax. If you're trying to dip candles and the wax doesn't build up on your string with multiple dips (we found this out by trial and error since the instructions, that we've read were "nonexistent"), wait, allow the candle to cool 1-2 minutes between dips and you may need to lower the temperature of the melted wax. My kids loved this story project and you can get LOTS of candles out of this large wick. (We didn't use all of the included wicks for the candles pictured, we still have some left.)
