Review on Sennheiser HD 660 S: Ultimate Hi-Res Open Back Headphone for Audiophiles by Hongseok Bak ᠌

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Reliable purchase, guaranteed to be a good purchase.

These are not the first, my headphones are open, so the comparison will be in the group of open headphones priced from 350 to 500 dollars. About the imaginary stage: the headphones are weak in this, the stage is perceived as smaller than other headphones of this type, all the music is "in the head", there is little air and scale in orchestral compositions. A plus for many will be that outside they give out much less sound than other open-type headphones, with these you can listen to music at night and not disturb loved ones in neighboring rooms. Low frequencies are enough for me, there is not much sub-bass, well, this is understandable, the dynamic driver is only 40mm. Lows are detailed for headphones of this class, not as fast as on planar magnetic headphones, but they have a nice punch and enough speed if the source is good. Mids: This is where these headphones excel. These headphones are designed for listening to vocal based compositions, the timbres of the voices are very well reproduced by these headphones and sound amazing (for $400 headphones). Treble: although I didn’t fill it, I lacked a little treble on these headphones, I partially fixed this by buying a custom, silver-plated xlr cable, but I still would like a little more. Well, the most important thing about these headphones, do not take them if you are thinking of plugging into a computer jack and listening to music, they need a good DAC and amplifier to realize their potential. Moreover, they did not play with entry-level DACs, the minimum bar on which they played is a DAC for 50+ sput. There was a drive, the density of sound, the lower frequencies sounded as they should. Do not take them if you are not going to bother with an amplifier (preferably balanced, I have them sang with singxer sda-2, and it gives 3450 mw / 32 om). Once again, without a good and powerful source, these headphones will disappoint you, please bear that in mind.

Pros
  • Reliable design, excellent ergonomics (you can sit in them at least all day, they don’t press anywhere, sometimes I forget about them), sound is even in frequency response
Cons
  • For the price, I'd say they don't. If you find fault directly, then you can call it shortcomings: the body is made of plastic and rough, velvet ear pads, but this is taste.
