convenient but inaccurate

This is a great tool to avoid having to open the oven every time you need to take the temperature of the meat to inspect it and the meat cool. You stick the probe into the meat (to avoid the bone), remove the wire from the oven, and watch as the temperature rises. The thermometer is magnetic. So if you have a fridge or microwave next to your oven, you can attach a reading piece to it to keep it from sliding off. I think the wire keeps the oven door slightly ajar, so you should probably set the temp about 5 degrees Fahrenheit higher than usual, but it's not enough to keep the oven light on, so it's fine. The problem with this product is that it doesn't stay true to what I've learned the hard way. I calibrated it according to the instructions (with ice) and when I first used it it seemed accurate enough and my meat came out fine. However, the second time the sensor showed a much higher temperature than the meat actually was and when I took out the meat and checked with the sensor attached to the same thermometer the temperature was different but still too high. The lamb, which turned out to be medium, was actually lean, almost raw in the middle. Either this thermometer needs to be calibrated before each use (which is annoying and not specified in the instructions) or I bought a broken one.

  • mostly good but...
