Review on ๐Ÿ”ง JWGJW 120034 Tooling Package: Enhance Your Mini Lathe with Quick Change Tool Post & Holders Multifid Tool Holder by Charles Lewellen

Revainrating 3 out of 5

I ordered two, they are not all made exactly the same!

I am giving these pins three stars mainly because of their value. These are not high end or professional grade tool posts and I wouldn't expect them for the price. I am writing this review after receiving the second one today. I ordered my first one about a year ago and was so pleased with it that I bought a second one for another lathe I have. The first worked right out of the box. Everything was fixed as it should and I didn't have to change it in any way. The tool holders do not snugly fit the dovetails, making accurate repeatability impossible without relocating the dovetail slot on the tool holders. I wouldn't run a tool stand as tool holders don't all have the same dovetail dimensions. I knew all this and still ordered a second one because they are good enough for my purposes (I mainly sharpen aluminium, acetal and HDPE plastic). I don't think these tool stands will be sturdy enough for someone who mainly works with steel material, but I use them occasionally for steel with light cuts. Now that I have a second one I understand where some of the bad reviews are coming from. They are not always made the same. My first worked fine for regular/light work with no modifications. It had a nice smooth finish. The second one I got was almost useless without modifications. The push pins it included were too long and it was impossible to use about half of the tool holders that came with it (remember that tool holder dovetails are not all the same size). I had to grind enough material on the hold down pins to make them retract far enough for the tool holders to slide down. 10 minutes of easy work and the problem is solved. The finish of the second one I got has a rough texture that isn't as good as the flat finish of the first one I got. I also had to file off some tool post errors along the outside of the dovetail that were causing the tool holders to get stuck. On a positive note, the tool holders in the new set actually fit the tool stand dovetails better than the first set I received. Still not very suitable, but better. I wouldn't necessarily recommend them to everyone just because there seems to be a lack of consistency in the way they are produced. They can be sent even worse than what I received, which won't surprise me in the slightest. If you are willing to spend a little time fixing bugs in one if necessary and have no special requirements. work, it can be an economical solution for you. I would venture into a third if another tool post was ever needed again, but if it required more work than I would have to do with the latest one I've gotten I'd probably send it back and try your luck again. These things are probably crap at best. You might get lucky like I bought with the first one, you might get by with a few minutes of work to get the bugs out of one like I did with the second one, or you might even end up with something worse that has to be Sent back for a refund or exchange as other reviews suggest.
