I received this item yesterday and I have since ordered a replacement. When I turned it on, the heat generated was really nice. I did notice a white glow almost in the middle which was a little concerning but I just thought that was the way it was made. I wanted to show my wife the heat and when I turned it on the next morning to show her, I heard a pop and the heating unit broke right at the spot that had the white glow. There was no glass or anything, just the realization that it wasn't going to work anymore. (see picture).The reason for the five stars and the defective title was because when I turned it on, it really put out a lot of heat and I loved the remote. I read the other reviews and they were both five stars. So I believe I just received a defective item and I did not want to bring down the ratings when I may have just received a dud. I will update this review upon receiving the replacement. Of course if the same thing happens (which I am hoping it does not), I will change my rating.UPDATE: I received my replacement heater and am so glad I did not give the old one any less stars because it was defective. Since it was a little cold outside when it arrived, I let it set for awhile. When I opened it, I called in my wife and daughter to check it out. Both could not believe the heat that comes out of this heater and comes out almost at an instant. This heater did not have the white glow like the other one so I knew there were no defects. I wish it had a fan, but as someone remarked, it probably would not be outdoor rated then. However, even without a fan, the heat just comes at you. I am pretty sure that most heaters cannot go over 1500 watts so I wasn't expecting it putting out so much heat. This is not the little 1500 watt heater that you have in your office or bathroom; this puts out heat like the wattage is so much higher. I am not sure this heater saves energy like the company claims, but there are not many electric heaters that do. One other bonus is that it comes with a timer; so if you wanted to warm up an area like a garage that you want to work in when it's cold outside, you can just set the timer and wait until it warms up. I give it five stars for heat output and function.
