Review on ๐Ÿ’ป Syba PCIe x4 10Gb Ethernet Network Card - AQC107-10Gbps NIC Adapter by Jon Estell

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Inexpensive card based on AQC107 with poor heat sink assembly

I bought this to Replacing the older AQC108 card (5GB and below). I was able to connect at 10Gbps almost immediately with no issues, but I noticed that the card's heatsink didn't get as hot as the slower card. I removed the heatsink after carefully removing the spring fasteners and found that the heatsink appeared to be attached to the chip with double sided tape (!) rather than the usual heat transfer method. It was transparent and wrinkled like cheap magazine glue. After replacing it with a suitable CPU mix and reinstalling the springs, the heatsink is now so hot that it hurts to touch when the card is running, so heat transfer is definitely improved. I suspect a lot of people are reporting that the card died. After a few months, they were actually boiled to death. If you have a case with very good airflow or a server case, you probably won't mind the awful tape, but otherwise consider taking it off and applying some decent CPU heatsink paste. You can release the plastic springs by gently squeezing and shaking the base on the back of the board. Caution: Sometimes they fly out of the board due to the spring.
