Worth changing if you know what you're doing

Installed on a 2004 Chevy Classic (2003 Malibu) just because those older designs are known to fail. I highly recommend removing the valve cover and tapping on the chain to release chain tension. It wasn't published alone and it's very easy to follow the link and knock the time.

Pros
  • Durable Test Results
Cons
  • Some Errors

The part you need when your Ecotec engine rattles when you start it.

No starting noise on 2005 Chevy Cobalt LS with 2.2L Ecotec engine. The valve cover was removed and installation was simple and straightforward. You must ensure that this tensioner is activated before starting the engine, otherwise there is a risk that the chain will jump over a tooth and cost you a lot of extra time and expense. , just buy a shim kit (Fel-Pro) and get it right just to be sure. Now the engine sounds perfect and runs smoothly.

  • Everything is fine!

Bad delivery, good product

Already arrived without terrible delivery. It came in a small box the size of a spanner in another box the size of a shoe box. Anyone who decides that shipping an ENGINE COMPONENT in a box with no bubble wrap or stuffing would be a smart idea should be fired. The article itself was installed directly on my 03 ION Ecotec and works as it should. I had to re-lock the tensioner (which took some strength) and then loosen it while it was on the car (via the long flat head and removed valve cover). 5…

OEM quality for the main component of the Ecotec engines. Excellent price.

On 4 cylinder Ecotec engines these tensioners will need to be loosened each time you remove them to replace the timing chain, replace the phaser or adjust the timing if the timing chain has skipped a tooth is. If you try to disable them, they are very easy to destroy. I buy OEM tensioners from AC Delco, the OEM supplier, and I always have a new one on hand. If you replace it, be sure to activate it before finally setting the time and reinstalling the valve cover. In addition, they must be…

Great product MUST activate before use

This spanner works right out of the box. There are no instructions in the box, but it does need to be torqued to 55 ft-lbs to install. Also note that this tensioner MUST BE ACTIVATED. By activated I mean make sure it's installed and tight, then put pressure on the chain/guide in front of the tensioner. It needs to be pushed in about 1/8 inch before the spring releases and tensions the chain. To do this you need to remove the valve cover. If you have any questions about this, visit the Cloyes…

Pros
  • Easy to read control panel
Cons
  • So far so good

A must for 2.2 Ecotec engines

My 2005 Malibu had excessive timing chain rattle, especially when starting. This redesigned part works much better. It's very quiet now. There is a heated debate about the installation method. Nobody recommends activating the tensioner before installation. Most recommend removing the valve cover and tapping it to activate it from the top with a blunt object long and thin enough to fit against the chain guide there. The plastic part of the chain guide broke. It was hard to tell if it was enabled

Pros
  • Previously Satisfied
Cons
  • Modern

3rd time the charm

This is GM's 3rd attempt to make this tensioner work. I just deleted the old one. (I sprayed it with PB Blaster a few times the day before.) Be careful not to rub it off, the head is very short. 32 million connectors. Then just screwed in a new one, tightened to 55 lbs and fired up. This seems to have eliminated the clicking noise. There's a lot of debate about whether you need to "activate" (loosen the piston) the tensioner after you've inserted it. Older models had to be hit from the inside…

Pros
  • Quality construction
Cons
  • Questionable purchase for seniors

Retired 2.2 liter screen 2005

I successfully installed it yesterday. It matched my 2005 Chevy Cavalier Ecotec 2.2 perfectly. Installation took me about 2.5 hours. Haven't removed the valve cover yet. It wasn't difficult, but I took my time and stayed organized. Before changing the tensioner, I had a noticeable "rattle" when starting the engine - more like the sound of a bike spinning at high speed when idling. After installing and activating a new tensioner, the noise disappeared. The engine also feels a little less…

  • Great for a small house
