Difficult to use, wish I had tried it

I bought Aquacoat to fill an ash guitar body with grit. I applied two coats and sanded lightly with 220 grit in between and after. I now have two problems: (1) The pores are not filled. I'm not sure, maybe I applied it wrong - I rubbed it with a rag - or maybe Aquacoat shrinks more than I thought. Significantly worse: (2) Excess Aquacoat dries to a cloudy residue. It's supposedly easy to sand off this residue, but I've found it impossible to sand it off without sanding off the shellac sealerโ€ฆ

Fiction! in Hardware

I bought this to use on a Tacoma DR-20 acoustic guitar where I needed to remove a defective polyester coating (long story but anyone who has had a Tacoma knows this) which bulged after 20 years. After removing the finish with heat and a scraper (a real must, but not the best alternative), I sanded the back and sides of the rosewood down to the bare wood. I came across this product in a YT video of a handyman answering a viewer question about alternatives to using epoxy as a pore filler (didn'tโ€ฆ

I use it to fill the pores of the guitars I build

I'm a master. I build, repair and restore acoustic guitars. I use Aquacoat to fill the pores of my models. It dries well and sands well. But you have to use it properly. My instructions may differ from Aquacoat's. But it works. Wood must be varnished before applying Aquacoat. I ALWAYS cover the wood with light colored shellac before applying Aquacoat. I paint my guitars with nitro lacquer or French Polished Shellac. My reasons for sealing wood with shellac: 1. Unlike other varnishes, shellacโ€ฆ

Doesn't really fit in oak cabinets

Love this product - doesn't smell good, clears and is very easy to work with. This works well when using it on wood with minimal grain and blemishes or using a clear polygon on it. It doesn't seem like a good product to paint old fashioned honey oak cabinets like other users. I've tried the methods recommended in the online video: use a hotel room key or credit card to actually apply the product to the fibers in multiple directions, tried four coats, and also tried Zinsser Glitter Sandingโ€ฆ

Pros
  • Certified
Cons
  • Cord is shorter than other picks

(Note: 1st photo without Aquacoat, 2nd photo with it.) Have used it on my oak cabinets and am overall very happy. For the top doors I applied 2 coats with a plastic trowel, then 1 coat of primer and 2 coats of Benjamin Moore Advance paint. As for the base cabinets, I burned out and applied just one coat but applied it a little more liberally, rubbing it in with the cloth and then wiping off the excess with a sweeping motion of the cloth. There is no significant difference in the bottom lineโ€ฆ

Excellent filler, requires some skill to apply

This product gives a perfectly clear putty on open pore woods such as oak, walnut, ash, hickory etc. However, it requires little skill and an adequate technique for its use (like all grain fillers), so I'm not surprised that some people are giving this product poor ratings, given the inability to simply open a can and get it to create flat surfaces on its own. . How to use this product: 1. Prepare the surface by sanding (up to 220) or planing2. Apply Aqua Coat with a plastic card, making sureโ€ฆ
