Plug and play with USB network adapters

I hooked it up to my Chromecast with Google TV and it just worked. It has a blue, not very bright, power indicator at the top, next to the logo, and link speed and activity indicators next to the Ethernet port. Although I didn't hit my max internet speed (300Mbps), I got around 150 on both tests using "Internet Speed Test - Fiber Optic Test". Latency and jitter were also about what I would expect from Ethernet. If I encounter any problems with the adapter I will update this post. Update: I'veโ€ฆ

Added full gigabit speed bonus over USB 3.0 Type-C

It's unclear that Cable Matters is listing this adapter as Ethernet up to 480Mbps. That's certainly true if you plug it into a USB 2.0 Type-C port, but for a USB 3.0 Type-C port you'll get about gigabit maximum speeds. In my LAN I tested this at 980 Mbps downstream and 940 Mbps downstream on a Thinkpad T480. I can also confirm that the adapter is rated for at least 90W USB-C PD, with the caveat that 90W is the largest charger of its type that I own. Considering how close it is to max, Iโ€ฆ

Works with CCwGTV

That's what I bought it for and it works. Restarting CC from settings seems to break the connection. Resolved by a hard reset or disconnection from the power source. I read that this applies to other adapters as well. I would upgrade the power supply with this or any other ethernet adapter. Some people have received low power notifications. I've never had this before, but I've been pulling my hair out with audio/video sync issues with my CC, which I've been using with an Ethernet adapter. Iโ€ฆ

Ethernet randomly stopped working

I connected three of these adapters to a 2020 Chromecast release. All three randomly require a full reboot (reconnecting to power) to recover the ethernet portion of the adapter. The activity indicators (connection speed / tx/rx) stay on when the device is idle and the Chromecast device (Google TV) reports that there is no internet connection. A soft "reboot" of a Chromecast device doesn't restore it (reboot within the device), it just drains it completely. This is happening on three of my 2020

Pros

Cons
  • Miscellaneous Miscellaneous

That's how it arrived and I was disappointed because I wanted to plug my Chromecast into the power connector but I didn't have a USB-C USB cable so i have ordered one. It arrived and it still didn't work because I didn't have a USB-C power adapter. I should have known that the PD port is for incoming power (power supply, i.e. "PD" is a proper noun for capacity/compatibility, not a general description of the port), but I didn't really think so, I had other projects . Anyway, to simplify, thisโ€ฆ
