Large handheld spotting scope

This is one of the smallest spotting scopes. ED glass offers excellent optical quality - bright, sharp and with very good color accuracy. It's better than my Nikon 10x30 Monarch 7 binoculars. I also like the smooth, easy-to-use focus ring. The only potential issue for some users is the tilt of the eyepiece - great for birding, but very unnatural for finding and tracking moving targets. I hope that Celestron will introduce a straight eyepiece version soon. I would buy one even though I already…

Celestron Hummingbird 9-27x56mm ED Micro Lens

Good size; small and light. I tried it on the street, the view is clear. Also tried through the window and still had a clear image to see detail. Later, at the end of the day, I tried it in low light. I was surprised at how bright the view was, even better than with the naked eye. The ability to gather light surprised me. This glass is very useful in low light conditions. I also like the option to change the eyepieces. I have a Celestron spotting scope with the same size eyepiece so I'll try…

Great little scope best at shooting

I have several binoculars. Some are quite expensive. This little Hummingbird 9-27x 56mm scope was a pleasant surprise. The first thing I found was that it has an eyepiece collet that allows you to mount regular 1.25 inch telescope eyepieces. I don't think this was documented anywhere in the documentation. I've only tried a few eyepieces, so I'm not ready to form an opinion on how effective they are. The only impression I have is that some eyepieces create quite a curvature in the field of view…

Celestron Hummingbird 9-27x56mm ED

Celestron Hummingbird 9-27x56mm ED Super small and light. An excellent combination of build quality and looks, size and weight at an affordable price. The optics work best at medium power. Small spherical distortion at low power. At maximum magnification, the optics also fail, including blurring (depending on the distance to the object, the further the worse, usually in hundreds of meters) and slight chromatic aberration. Overall though, the ED glass does a great job and the XA is only slightly

  • No insurance

Nice addition to my birding binoculars

After years of struggling with a large (and poor quality) spotting scope I decided to give the Hummingbird Birding Scope a try and I'm very glad I did. Because it's small and light, I can carry it in a small backpack or even in my jacket pocket. Although the lower 9-27 magnification doesn't make sense for longer distances, I find it to be the right complement to my Leopold 10x50 binoculars. At 9 I can still easily spot the bird, and at 27 the scope is very sharp with just the right amount of…

I liked the small size, image quality should be better

I really wanted this tiny scope to work. I'm a casual ornithologist in the Northeast looking for a little more detailed observation. I like to go for walks and don't carry too much gear with me. For reference, my binoculars are Zeiss Conquest HD 8x32 (Zeiss mid-range). I like their image quality and small size (see thread here?). To me, this is a great balance of quality and value. I was looking for the same thing from a Hummingbird scope. While the Hummingbird 9-27x56mm gave me more options, I

Pros
  • Builds confidence
Cons
  • Requires socket

I bought this scope for a service inspection or shot through the scope with my cell phone during a trip to Alaska. I haven't been to Alaska yet, but I've been training in my backyard. I wanted to see how close I can pick up animals that are too far away, but we may be far enough away that we might see bears or whales on our trip. In the attached photos I'm comparing an image that was fully zoomed out on my iPhone XR, zoomed fully in to the digital zoom range where you can see how much…
