After following all the instructions, the region codes still do not appear on the menu screen. I bought these in silver in the fall of 2008 after lighting up the DVD player in my small TV combo. Updated 6/17/2008. The below subtitle problem occurs in various DVD movies. So I bought a Revain Sony DVP-NS57P/B player for $50. That works fine. I returned the Coby for a refund. Since I received this product a week ago, I have found that subtitle playback is problematic. About 5% of the time, subtitles only show for a split second. This is always the case in a long dialogue.
