Worth it on EVERY hike.

It's big, bigger than others and it's worth it. I have a 65L backpack and it takes up most of the space inside, but you can carry the backpack outside with a carry bag that you have to buy separately. I packed 8 meals at Berghaus, a few bags of tuna, a few breakfast items and a few bags of condiments (ketchup, mustard, S+P). Easily attaches to any package. I haven't touched anything, but I'm calm, I'll sing tomorrow morning! Nothing sucks like being in the outback, drinking beer and eating all…

Highly recommended for camping and hiking

Protected my food while biking in Idaho. I didn't encounter any bears on the drive, but the camping squirrels were crazy and aggressive! They struggled to get into the barrel and all they could do was gnaw a hole in the shipping box. The cover is sometimes difficult to remove even if you know how to do it. but it is enough to just tilt the container to the side and it will easily fall down when the locks are opened. Something to keep in mind - given the very hot day temperatures and cool nights

Pros
  • Ideal for a small home
Cons
  • The list goes on.

Well Folded Bear Canister

Used for a 5 day motorcycle trek in the mountains of Georgia. There was enough space to store groceries and things that smell nice on the go (soap, deodorant, shaving cream, sunscreen, toothpaste, etc.). It is very durable and is easily opened with a coin or pocket knife. The outer shell is very durable. It held up very well in the extra case and I was able to transport it together with the REI camping chair in the side case on my Concours 14. I chose yellow so it can be seen later in the…

Heavy but well preserved and working.

As with all gear, there's a battle between weight, cost and performance. choose 2. If you can handle the weight hit, this is the best option. I did a pretty thorough search and couldn't find a trail or park that didn't accept this model. If an accepted list exists, it is in the list. If there's a "NO" list, it's not there. Even the carbon fiber models have a history of failures, but I couldn't find one for this can. Everyone knows the stories of broken bags and problems with BV in attics and…

Featured! great for camping and hiking

We did a small section of the Appalachian Trail that required a bear canister so we have this just right for the purpose. PROS: 1. It was nice not hanging our food in the allowed sections every night. 2. I felt a lot more comfortable knowing our belongings were safe from rodents and other critters. 3. The bright yellow color is easy to spot when you're ready to try. 4. Spacious. We were able (with some effort) to accommodate just over 4 days of food for two. CONS: 1. It's heavy. For us as a…

Bear Cannister: Bear Protection

They're needed in almost every place I'm now and a necessary evil. I was tired of renting them from the park department so I decided to drop the money myself. This thing is huge and doesn't have a clean cylindrical shape (I guess our friends with non-opposite thumbs will have a hard time dealing with this), making it difficult to carry unless you opt for an extra pocket. I have an 80 liter backpack and it fits in but leaves little room for anything other than a sleeping bag and clothes…
