Maybe it's a fake ublox 8 chip, not original NEO-M8N I managed to update the firmware to 3.0.1 but the performance of the chip is pretty bad. Compared to the ublox 7 in the VK162 USB mouse, it catches 2-4 fewer satellites and has significantly lower accuracy. According to ublox's website, unlicensed fake NEO-M8N modules are a big problem and poor performance is a typical symptom. Receiving the satellite signal is much faster and the accuracy is higher despite the smaller (18mm) antenna.

It turns out it's the wild west, with many suggestions that don't work well at all, some seem like fake scammers, and some work great. I've tried a few with the antenna built in and thought it would be perfect, but none of them work as well as this one. I do all my testing indoors on my kitchen counter as they all work well in ideal outdoor conditions and it's harder to spot a few dB difference that could really make a difference
