Decent GPS that works with the tinyGPS++ Arduino library

Works with flight avionics (there are pads on the back that you can solder to if you don't want to use the included cable). This was the first GPS that I got working with the aforementioned Arduino library. There are examples within that library that you can look at get up and running. Only Rx, Tx, VCC (I think it uses 5V) and GND are really needed. Adafruit has 2 good uFl antennas that you can use with this as well (product #s 2460 and 2461).

Won't get lock next to Window

Tested this by setting it next to a glass window. It was NOT outside, but even a 15 year old handheld garmin could lock satellites in this location. This thing never got more than 3 satellites, and never locked. This hardware would have been okay circa 2004, but in 2022, this is unacceptable.Took it completely outside, and it was able to lock and give accurate readings. I don't know if it needs a bigger antenna, or what, but I cannot recommend it.Software configuration was okay, and it worked…

Perfect GPS device for a current-day laptop

I was looking for a replacement for the Microsoft GPS stick that came with my copy of Streets & Trips 2008; it had worked flawlessly for years through my travels, but once I upgraded to Windows 10.nothing. No driver updates. Nothing at all. It wouldn't read the device. Easy Installation Under Linux

I installed Lubuntu Linux on an 11 year old Asus Eee PC netbook to use as the control computer for a portable digital amateur radio station. It needed GPS, partly for position, but mostly as a precise time reference for the weak signal modes that require synchronized transmission and reception. Not as sensitive as earlier model

I had an earlier version of this gps and it worked in the house. This "upgraded " model doesn’t. It only works for me outside with access to open sky. I need to find my older one.

Easy to use with raspberry pi

I got this to add time and location to a raspberry pi 3 for a ham radio project. Worked perfectly! I have removed the plastic casing because the USB ports on the pi are tightly packed, the PCB is small and easily stacks with other peripherals.

Great for education!

I would say this is a great place to start if you want to learn about computers and how they work. I’m already thinking of educational projects in STEM that I could get from this and a RaspberryPi. iwon’t say this is a plug and play device because it does take some technical knowledge. I’m not sure how it would look or work on a more mainstream OS. I plugged this into a 2009 netbook running FreeBSD and got NMEA language stream from /dev/cuaU0 pretty quickly. Its cheap, its ok good for me

The description of the product its a bit misleading. It claims raspberry pi compatibility , however, the hardware is not listed in the official raspberry image. The dongle works with the raspberry but not out of the box. A few searches in google and a few reboots will get it working.

I use it on my Raspberry Pi 3 and 4 for location and time-keeping. Gets a good 3D fix quickly when it has a good view of the sky. I bought another one after buying the first.

An okay GPS dongle in my review

The Diymall VK-172 is an OK GPS/GLONASS dongle for your laptop or tablet at a very reasonable price. The USB dongle connects painlessly to both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.4.10. However, be aware of its limitations. If you plug the dongle in a location with marginal satellite coverage then the dongle can take up to 45 minutes to start producing location data. Once it finds enough satellites then it maintains position fairly well. Other GPS dongles tested in the same marginal coverage locations…

Great hobby GPS in my review

This GYGPSV5-NEO is for a Pixhawk APM drone autopilot, except I am using mine with an Elegoo Mega2560. This unit has two devices built in. A Honeywell HMC5983 compass with magnetic compensation. Works OK - internal battery issue.

I discovered that both of the USB GPS I purchased had bad internal batteries. These are small 3 volt batteries that are used to store ephemeris data while the USB dongle is not powered. With no data backup (sometimes called Battery Backed Ram, or BBR), the device defaults to 'cold start' mode every time. I worked around this by soldering my own 3V CR2032 in a battery holder with leads to the internal circuit board. You will then need to reconfigure the device to use AssistNow Autonomous mode…

Works great. Use it for Amateur Radio mainly.

Shows up as a USB serial port. I got it to tinker with GPS and Ham Radio mainly. But given that it just shows up as a USB serial port, a standard part of the USB stack, I'm sure it could be used on something like a Raspberry Pi. Seems kina cheaply made but dang it locked in fast. Even for the very first power on. Seems like a great antenna in there. Even worked well on the side of my laptop sitting at my desk near a closed window.

I wish these were more popular. I hope they stick around. I cannot believe how well they work and how cheap they were. I have ordered several more, just to have in the future. All are being used in Kali distributions on both laptops for war-driving and RPi 2 B's for war walking. They will stop picking up sats inside some buildings, but inside a car is fine. The bright, green LED is perfect for letting me know when they are receiving.

I received this board and immediately connected it to the u-center software downloaded from u-blox. I am going on a world cruise, and so I downloaded a navigation application for windows from [.] called navigator free. And yes, it is free. After installing it, you download the maps you want - one for each country (or for each state for the US). I will be going to 25 countries around the world and so I downloaded them all.
