As for the plastic holders, this device is great and you can use it vertically or horizontally. Don't move it, but the connection from the holder itself to your expensive GPS isn't that strong. This Garmin Edge GPS bike mount seems to be a more secure model than the one that came with my device. The difference is how the Edge securely snaps into the mount on the back of the Edge.
